8th St Sidewalk

Update 6: Thank you to all of the supporters and to DDOT - the sidewalk is now installed. Not quite a ribbon-cutting, but here's a picture of my mom and I with the new sidewalk:

Update 5: DDOT has indicated the sidewalk will be installed the week of March 6. Let's cross our fingers. Thanks for your advocacy.

Update 4: On January 16, 2018, this issue was unanimously supported by the full ANC5E Commission as part of Resolution 2018-01. We are still actively pushing DDOT to install the sidewalk in 2018, alongside the Monroe St Bridge project.

Update 3: DDOT has drafted a proposed sidewalk design. The bike team is also working through several concepts for the proposed 8th St bike lane.

Update 2: As a follow-up to our sidewalk petition, I will be hosting a special meeting with DDOT on Thursday, November 9 at 7 pm. DDOT will provide an update on the Monroe Street Bridge project, the sidewalk, and the bike lane proposal for 8th St.

Update: Our petition was delivered to DDOT Interim Director Marootian on October 1. Please feel free to continue to sign the petition if you'd like updates on this issue. I will update here and by email.

8th St NE is home to a vibrant and growing community of arts, residential, commercial, industrial, and educational uses. The west side of 8th St has a sidewalk from Monroe Street to Franklin Street. The east side has a brief sidewalk from Monroe halfway to Lawrence, then again in front of the ArtSpace Lofts and Dance Place.

Residents have long asked for this sidewalk to be completed so that they can safely walk from the Brookland Metro all the way to Dew Drop Inn. The 2016 Brookland-Edgewood Liveability Study recommends a sidewalk be added throughout the length of the street.

As part of the Monroe Street Bridge replacement, the District Department of Transportation is installing a new sidewalk from Monroe St to Lawrence, but no farther. We, the undersigned, request that DDOT at a minimum extend the new sidewalk the 100 meters from Lawrence to the existing sidewalk at Kearny, and prioritize pedestrian improvements along the length of 8th St.

Can we also extend the side walks along 9th St NE, between Girard and Kearny?

So many of Dance Place’s students, young people and audience members would benefit from a sidewalk, especially our children.

Yes please! Walking in he streets is just simply not safe: two way street with bike lanes in both sides and no pedestrian option? Danger!
