Update

On January 16, 2018, this issue was unanimously supported by the full ANC5E Commission as part of Resolution 2018-01. The one change from the below is that we are no longer requesting the removal of the Hamlin St stop (due to community feedback). The request is for new shelters southbound at Monroe, Jackson, and Franklin and the removal of the Kearny St stop.

Ask WMATA for G8 bus shelters and a faster ride

Currently, the ridership numbers for the G8 are not high enough to have shelters built. By removing stops at Kearny and Hamlin, we can have 3 shelters to wait in and a faster ride for everyone. Right now there are 5 stops along the 0.5 mile between Monroe and Franklin. The stops are currently 420-520 feet apart. There aren’t enough riders at any given stop to justify a shelter.  Too many bus stops means that buses aren’t moving as quickly as they should be. See images of the current stops to determine if there's room for shelters.

Bus stop balancing would improve the ride for everyone along the route with minimal impact to those along 7th St. People who can currently reach multiple stops won’t see any difference. For riders at stops that have been moved, the maximum added walk time to a new stop should be 500 feet at a maximum. This (slightly) longer walk means a faster ride, which will enable people to spend more time doing the things they love.

    The G8 bus stop at 7th & Kearney/Kenneth (#1002104) should be relocated back to its original location at 7th & Monroe St., which is an ideal transfer point from the major 80 & H4/8 bus lines, adjacent to commercial/retail, halfway point between the preceding and next bus stops on the route and in-line with WMATA bus stop maps/communication. The proposed bus stop balancing + bus shelters is a great way to expedite transit on the G8.

    Please consider relocating this bus stop, riders have no where to sit and often have to rest on the brick walls and stairs of homes in front the bus pick up.

    Would also love to see some 4-way stop signs at 7th & Kearny and 7th & Lawrence. It’s becoming very dangerous for both pedestrians and vehicles turning onto 7th St, and the current road striping confuses many drivers as-is.

    Need to add speed bumps on 7th ST NE between Franklin ST NE to Monroe St NE. A lot of cars speed on 7th and run through the stop sign at Jackson St NE. I have seen the G8 bus do this also and almost hit me while on my bike crossing the street.
